July 2023

Hello and thank you all for coming to join us this evening.

We meet here on the first Monday of every month to remember the UK women who have been killed by men.

This is the 23rd time we have met now, prompted by the murder of Sarah Everard on 3 March 2021. We hoped that the high profile nature of that case would have prompted the press and politicians to take this social epidemic seriously and try to shine a light on the root causes. Sadly that hasn’t been the case.

We’ve been reading a new report that highlight the horrible statistics in this area and also look at the roots causes and we’re hoping to work with the author – Polly Newall – to raise awareness across the board.

The report repeats the dreadful statistic we know that 3 women a week are killed on average, but also looks at some of the details behind that headline:

1 in 5 women in the UK have been the victim of a sexual attack, 1 in 4 have been or are victims of domestic abuse and 70% of the women killed were killed in their own home. The vast majority of those killed are murdered by someone they know, trust, and love.

It also states that violence directed at women and girls is a manifestation of

unequal power relations between men and women. This is supported by numerous studies across the globe.

A global review of evidence conducted in 2016 found that violence directed at women and girls tends to be more common in societies with high levels of gender inequality.

Many aspects of society in the UK are still very much organised around the

principles of patriarchy where men hold most of the power and where women are disadvantaged and denied equality with men. Amongst other things, this sends the message that women are less valuable or important than men and boys, whether in the home, in the workplace, or in wider society
