Oct 22

HI, good evening and thanks once again to everyone for coming.

After our vigil last month, which was our first anniversary, we thought long and hard about how and whether to continue and we decided that even though we are not making an immediate and obvious impact it is incredibly important still that we are highlighting the dreadful social epidemic that is the killing of women by men.

We talked about recording the speeches and posting them on social media and we are still planning to do that but haven’t managed to sort it for this month.

I will keep this short.

Since January 1st this year, and until September 17th, 80 women have been killed by men – or a man is the primary suspect in the police case.

Since our last vigil the following women are some of those that have been added to that gruesome list.

Patricia Bitters: she was 84, and her 25 year-old grandson has been charged with her murder.

Harleen Kaur Satpreet Gandhi: she was 32 and her husband has been charged with her murder.

Hollie Thompson: Hollie was just 28, and her partner has been charged with her murder.

An as yet unnamed woman aged 60, and a man aged 66, were found dead in a house in Portsmouth. Police have commenced a murder investigation with regards to the death of the woman and are not seeking anyone else.

Jillu Nash: Jillu – 44 - and her 12-year-old daughter Louise, were found dead in a property in Suffolk. Jillu was strangled and Louise died from stab wounds. A 46-year-old man, who is hospital, has been arrested on two counts of murder.

Jill Barclay: she was 47. she was stabbed and set on fire at a roundabout in Aberdeen  A 22 year old man has been charged with this sick and twisted has murder.

I’m going to steal from Mandu Reid now and the words she had us chant when she spoke at our last vigil. Se made us say that we believed change would come, and I’d kind of stopped believing it until she said it so I think it’s important to say it again.

Please repeat after me

I

I believe

I believe change

I believe change will come

I believe change will come

Thank you

Thank you again for being here tonight
