Nov 22
Hi, good evening and thanks once again to everyone for
coming.
I want to start with some good news!!
The number of women we are reporting as having been killed
by men is the lowest it has been at this point in the year for the last 5
years!
But still, since January 1st this year, and until
September 24th, 85 women have been killed by men – or a man is the
primary suspect in the police case.
So it’s not good news is it, really? That’s still 85 too
many.
And the fact that the total was 139 in 2018 – well that’s
just horrific.
And it hasn’t been a steady decline which can be attributed
anything that any person or organisation or government or media company has
done – which is why we are still here and still banging on about it.
So that’s why we need to keep doing this, and much, much
more. The social epidemic of men killing women is still an under reported and
under addressed travesty. And if anyone tries to tell you that everything is ok
because the numbers are coming down then feel free to put them in touch with
me, after you have explained a few facts to them obviously!
By the way the comparative number was 89 in 2020 and
increased to 120 in 2021.
Since our last vigil the following women are some of those
that have been added to that gruesome list.
7 October 2022: Diana Dafter, 36, was found stabbed to death
in a property in Northampton. Her husband Phillip Dafter, 32, has been charged
with her murder.
12 October 2022: Hilary Round, 67, was found in her home in
Ilford. The cause of her death was given as ‘compression to the neck’. Her
neighbour, Jamie Cook, 31, has been charged with murder.
22 October 2022: Angie White, 45, was found dead in her home
in Swansea. Daniel White, 35, has been charged with her murder.
23 October 2022: Yolanda Saldana Feliz, 53, was stabbed to
death in Stratford, E. London, along with a second woman who has survived.
Police are seeking Miguel Angel Alvarez Florentino, 38, in relation to the
murder.
24 October 2022: Deborah Gumbrell, 59, was found unconscious
at home by police responding to reports of an assault. Her husband James
Gumbrell has been charged with her murder.
I’m going to steal again from Mandu Reid and the words she
had us chant when she spoke at our vigil. She made us say that we believed
change would come, and more than ever that needs to be true so it’s important to
say it again.
Please repeat after me
I
I believe
I believe change
I believe change will come
I believe change will come
Thank you
Thank you again for being here tonight
And I hope to see you all again and your friends and your
families at our next vigil will be on Monday 5th December.
